Application of Barite Powder

Barite is a barium sulfate mineral, and the main component is barium sulfate (BaSO4). Produced in geothermal fluid veins, it often coexists with galena, sphalerite and chalcopyrite. It has the characteristics of high density, good filling, insoluble in water and acid, non-toxic, can absorb radiation, stable chemical properties and thermodynamic properties.

Barite is mainly used as a weighting agent for oil and gas drilling, accounting for about 85% of the total consumption. It also can be used as a filler in the paint industry and used as raw material for making barium carbonate, barium chloride, barium sulfate, barium nitrate, etc. in the chemical industry.

Weighting Agent For Oil And Gas Drilling

After being crushed into a fine powder, barite can be used as a weighting agent for drilling mud in oil wells. The specific gravity of the mud can be increased to resist the pressure of the formation to prevent collapse and prevent formation fluids from invading the borehole. Generally, the weight of drilling mud used in oil and gas well drilling must be balanced with the pressure of underground oil and gas to avoid accidents of blowout. In the case of high underground pressure, it is necessary to increase the specific gravity of mud. Adding barite powder to the mud is an effective measure to increase the specific gravity of the mud.

Barite is an indispensable raw material for the production of barium carbonate, barium chloride, barium sulfate, zinc barium white, barium hydroxide, barium oxide, etc. These barium compounds are widely used in reagents, catalysts, TV glass bulbs, barium ferrite , Sugar refining, textiles, fire prevention, various fireworks, synthetic rubber coagulants, plastics, insecticides, steel surface quenching, phosphors, fluorescent lamps, fluxes, grease additives, water treatment, etc.

Barite is used as concrete aggregate and paving material, which can prolong the life of pavement. It can be used in nuclear facilities, atomic energy plants, X-ray laboratories, etc. instead of lead plates, and it can play a good shielding role.

Here comes the questions: as more than 80% of barite is used for weighting agent in oil & gas drilling industry, what’s the standard of these barite? How to produce the qualified drilling barite product?

API (American Petroleum Institution) Standard: D97=200mesh barite powder or D90=325mesh powder.

ZENITH solutions for making these barite product:
