Bentonite Raymond Grinding Mill Operation
Quarried bentonite first is delivered to the processing equipment. If the raw clay contains high moisture content, the bentonite material need to be dried by drying plant. The bentonite may also be mixed with other grades of bentonite to produce a uniform material. The material then is go through a screen and crusher to reduce the clay pieces to less than 2.5 cm in size.
Next, the crushed bentonite is dried in rotary or fluid bed dryers fired with natural gas, oil, or coal to reduce the moisture content to 7 to 8 percent. The temperatures in bentonite dryers generally range from 900буC at the inlet to 100 to 200буC at the outlet. The dried material then is ground by means of roller or hammer mills. At some facilities which produce specialized bentonite products, the material is passed through an air classifier after being ground. Soda ash also may be added to the processed material to improve the swelling properties of the clay.

Grinding is an integral stage in bentonite production process and requires the most energy of all the mineral processing stages. Because of this, in bentonite size reduction operation ,the material will be first crushed to reduce the amount of larger materials sent to grinding, thereby reducing the overall energy consumption in grinding.
If possible, grinding is performed wet as this requires less energy, allowing energy savings of up to 30 % compared to dry grinding. In grinding, the particles are usually reduced by a combination of impact and abrasion of the ore by the free motion of grinding bodies such as steel rods, balls or pebbles in the mill.
